Spay Surgery at Our Clinic

A “spay” is a surgical procedure that removes the ovaries, eliminating the hormones responsible for heat cycles in female dogs and cats. This procedure helps control overpopulation and prevent various reproductive diseases.

There are two types of spay surgeries:

  • Ovariectomy (OVE): Removal of only the ovaries.
  • Ovariohysterectomy (OVH): Removal of both the ovaries and uterus.

Traditionally, OVH has been the standard in the U.S. and Canada, while OVE has been widely used in Europe for decades. Research shows that uterine diseases rarely occur without ovarian hormones, making OVE a safe and effective alternative in healthy animals.

OVE is often associated with smaller incisions, shorter surgical and anesthesia times, and potentially less post-operative pain compared to OVH. However, both procedures are effective. At our clinic, the type of spay performed depends on the veterinarian conducting the surgery.

If you have any questions about your pet’s procedure, we’re happy to discuss the best option for their care by calling 541-200-2525. A scheduler will call you back.

**Friends of the Animal Shelter uses rabies adjuvant vaccines in all pets vaccinated for rabies. The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) have guidelines that affirm the safety of adjuvants in vaccines administered to cats. According to a 2020 study in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, cats vaccinated with adjuvant rabies vaccines showed no significant adverse effects when administered in accordance with the established vaccination protocols (Day, M. J., et al., 2020).
